Illegal Street Racing - 1684 Words

Illegal Street Racing At least once a week, we hear on the news about someone dying as a result of illegal street racing. Sometimes, its the driver or passenger of the car that is racing who gets killed, but often times its innocent bystanders or drivers of other cars who are killed by the reckless teens who engage in a highly dangerous activity. First of all, what is illegal street racing, think Fast and the Furious, and second, what can be done to stop this from happening or at least reduce the amount of deaths that occur each year as a result of illegal street racing? This final paper will explore these questions and provide one possible solution to this on-going problem. Street racing has been around since the early 1930s†¦show more content†¦In fact, increasing the penalties may only encourage illegal street racers to try harder to evade police, since they would be arrested regardless of whether they tried to escape. Stiffer penalties and fines cannot be the only solution to this ever increasing problem. Instead, the better approach to curbing illegal street racing would be to provide young people with an out for racing that is safe, such as a racetrack. Racetracks give people the opportunity to show off their cars, race, socialize with other racers and satisfy need for speed without jeopardizing their life or the lives of others. Our Hawaii legislatures have recognized the need for a controlled environment for people to race their cars which is why they recently passed legislation that mandates the State to find locations within the State of Hawaii that can be used as sanctioned racetracks. The idea is that by opening racetracks, you make it easier for people who might otherwise engage in illegal street racing and endanger the lives of others. Another positive thing that can be done is for local organizations to get involved and help sponsor different types of racing events. In California, Race Legal holds events throughout Southern California to help get young kids that participate in dangerous illegal street racing off of the streets and gives them a safe and legal place to race. Margaret Atwoods The Handmaids Tale Essay - 962 Words

Margaret Atwoods The Handmaids Tale The Historical Notes are important in the way we perceive the novel as they answer many important questions raised by the novel and also enhance some of the novels main themes. The first question it answers is the one raised at the end of the novel; that is whether Offred is stepping up into the, darkness, or the, light. The reader finds out that Offred escaped Gilead, presumably into Canada, with the help of the,Underground Femaleroad. The reader also learns that it was Nick who orchestrated her escape, using his position as a member of the Eyes. This is important to the novel as it means that the novel can feasibly be a transcript of her story, a story she could not have told if†¦show more content†¦This again demonstrates to the reader the flaws Atwood perceives in modern society, and that what happened in Gilead could happen in our world. The Historical Notes are also important in that they show the reader that Gilead has finished, and that it had its problems, purges and internal upheavals. This provides one of the few messages of hope in the novel, that no matter how severe, not all totalitarian rule lasts forever. This is reminiscent of other rules in the past such as Nazi Germany or Modern day Russia under the rule of Stalin. This also again places the events of the novel firmly in our time period and demonstrates that Gilead is not the first totalitarian society. Another reference to, the time before, comes when the Handmaids uniforms are compared to those which were worn by, German Prisoners of War, again helping to root the novel firmly in our time. Another important effect of the Historical notes is that it demonstrates how people studying The Handmaids Tale perceive it, as a nice story, but something that couldnt happen in this day and age. The fact that Piexto states that, we are happily more free, from the problems contained in Offreds account demonstrates that many people, in theShow MoreRelated Margaret Atwoods The Handmaids Tale Essay1246 Words   |  5 PagesMargaret Atwoods The Handmaids Tale In The Handmaids Tale, Margaret Atwood tells a saddening story about a not-to-distant future where toxic chemicals and abuses of the human body have resulted in many men and women alike becoming sterile. Secret life of the brain free essay sample

Neurons travel everyday in millions to carry out different task. It’s fascinating how they travel as if they are traveling across the country. They’re following cues along the way that are telling them exactly where to go. Evidence shows that young neurons have an idea about where they migrate to and can recognize their position within the brain. Neuroniologist Susan McCnell devised a series of experiment to track the destiny of a migrating neuron. Dr. McCnell found that the fate of the soon-to-become neuron was determined by his neighbor neuron. It travel beside its neighbor and took on the same function they did. The new neuron then goes on its own path, and takes on an entirely different function from the cells surrounding it. The Child’s Brain: Syllable From Sound Explain how the child’s brain is able to take a â€Å"great leap† and learn to master language? A young child has twice as many neurons than adults. I can relate being the eldest of my siblings’ language development represents one of the most profound mysterious changes. The Aging Brain: Through Many Life Explain how age affects mental performance? The lab at the University of Michigan studies shows how age affects mental performance. Its director, psychologist Denise Park, gathers evidence that presents a new view of brain aging. Aging begins in our 20s, as soon as we reach maturity, our data show clearly as we age from twenty to thirty, we get a little bit slower. We process information not quite fast. Then suddenly we turn seventy and start noticing that these continuous declines have aggregated our memory. The more unfamiliar the information, the more trouble we’re going to have remembering. We will also forget simple things such as where did I park my car. Explain the job of the hippocampus on brain activity? The hippocampus is a major component of the brain.. It plays important roles in long-term memory and spatial navigation. Like the cerebral cortex, with which it is closely associated, it is a paired structure in the left and right sides of the brain. The hippocampus is located inside the medial temporal lobe, beneath the cortical surface. In Alzheimers disease the hippocampus is one of the first regions of the brain to suffer damage; memory problems and disorientation appear among the first symptoms. Damage to the hippocampus can also result from oxygen starvation (hypoxia), encephalitis, or medial temporal lobe epilepsy. People with extensive hippocampal damage may experience amnesia which is the inability to form or retain new memories. What goes wrong in the brain to cause depression? The human brain operates, much like your automobile, on fluids called neurotransmitters. Just as your automobile have brake fluid, antifreeze, transmission fluid, and oil your brain runs on these neurotransmitters. Some give us energy, like those related to adrenalin, some control body movements (dopamine as an example), and some control mood. The brain neurotransmitter often associated with depression is called serotonin. Serotonin is the brains oil, a rather slow-acting neurotransmitter that is associated with sleep, appetite, energy, alertness, and mood just to name a few. Using the automobile as an example, if we drive our car to California at a speed of 120 mile per hour, running the engine hot for a long time, it would obviously use more oil. As long as we provided gas, however, it would continue to run. Now suppose in our trip that for every two quarts of oil we burn, we only replace one quart. By the time we reached California wed be several quarts low and our engine would be obviously overworked and overheated causing it to slow down.

The Characteristic Features of the New Age Movement

The period of the 1970s-1980s in the USA is characterized by the awakening of the great interest to the spiritual practices which can lead to the individual’s spiritual growth as a result of the strong connection with God and cosmic energy. The New Age movement in the USA begins to develop in the 1970s with references to the expanding Eastern practices and works by David Spangler as the ideologist of the New Age.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Characteristic Features of the New Age Movement specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More However, it is impossible to speak about Spangler as the founder of the movement because the New Age cannot be discussed as the church or organization, and the notion includes a variety of the associated movements developing during different periods of time. The number of the movement’s adherents in the USA and over the world is unknown, there is no founder, but there are a l ot of leaders who organize rather different movements combined under the label of the New Age. Although there is no clear definition of the New Age movement typical for the USA, it is necessary to focus on the variety of the movement’s characteristic features the analysis of which allows speaking about the definite unity of the movement because of the adherents’ following the same principles. The flexibility in defining the New Age influences the possibilities to discuss the movement as the complex organization. One of the ways to define the New Age movement is the concentration on its features and principles which help determine the followers of the movement and separate it from the other popular spiritual practices. The New Age is not only the multi-branch movement based on the definite religious and spiritual practices, but it is also a way of living (Hemeyer, 2010). Thus, the movement also includes â€Å"a preference for clothing made from natural fibers such as c otton and wool over synthetics, natural cosmetics and household products, organic food and growing food at home, and limitation of participation in America’s consumer-based culture† as well as the orientation to the developing and meditative practices (Corbett Hemeyer, 1997, p. 297).Advertising Looking for essay on religion theology? It is important to pay attention to the fact that â€Å"there is vast diversity within the New Age movement. Beliefs and, especially, practices range from the serious and thoughtful to the frivolous and mercenary† (Corbett Hemeyer, 1997, p. 297). That is why, m any persons who follow definite practices shared by adherents of the movement can consider themselves as belonging to the movement because the ideals of this belief system are extremely publicized (Corbett Hemeyer, 1997). The main dogmas or principles supported by the followers of the New Age movement are based on the idea of the personal and spiritual growth. The adherents of the movement seek for the global unity and harmony in their relations with spiritual forces and nature, orient to the individual experiences, needs, and interests (Pike, 2004). From this perspective, the followers of the movement share a specific approach to the medical treatment accentuating the idea of an individual care and therapy (Hemeyer, 2010). Moreover, pursuing the idea of the self-improvement and connecting with the cosmic energy to build their own reality, many adherents go in for yoga and become vegetarians. It is important to note that the modern marketing system supports the public’s inte rest in the New Age movement, and there are many books and magazines for the followers, special shops, and restaurants. It is claimed that the ideals of the movement are also reflected in the New Age music (Hemeyer, 2010). Thus, this spiritual movement with a lot of branches and teachings such as Transcendentalism, Astrology, or Theosophy can contribute to the needs of the USA population because everyone can find something attractive in this movement. The tendencies typical for the 20th-21st centuries to focus on diversity and self-development are reflected in this system of beliefs and practices. The basic idea of the New Age movement is that a man is equal to God, and he is the part of the global unity that is why a man can build his own world, and the supporters of this thinking respect the individual vision of the other people in relation to their own reality, spirituality, and self-development.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Characteristic Features o f the New Age Movement specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More As a result, the New Age movement is also associated with a lot of self-help movements which are characteristic for the American reality (Hemeyer, 2010). If several decades ago the New Age movement was based on a range of esoteric practices according to which the metaphysical and psychedelic ideas were accentuated, today the followers of the movement use the definite practices such as yoga, meditation, and relaxation in order to improve their life, make it easier and more comfortable. The main approach is the everyday connection with the cosmic energy which is available for everyone. Thus, nowadays the New Age movement is developed to meet people’s everyday needs to overcome the stress of the world progress while orienting to the traditional Eastern practices. Adapting the definite religious principles which are typical for different world religions to the needs of the peo ple, the New Age movement becomes one of the most influential spiritual systems because of the great impact on the media and consumerism. It is possible to observe the principles of the New Age movement in many other small or significant movements because of their applicability. Thus, many vegetarians choose healthy and chemical-free food in the specialized shops according to the ideas of the New Age wave (Hemeyer, 2010). A lot of persons share the idea about the negative and positive energy, global unity, and self-development without understanding the role of the New Age practices and beliefs in their life. It is necessary to focus on the fact that many Christians are even not aware of the fact that they follow dogmas and principles typical rather for the New Age movement than for the traditional Christianity. That is why, it is possible to speak about the significant popularity of the movement among the independent persons who intend to improve their life and personality, to devel op their spirituality, and to achieve the definite harmony with focusing on the world’s balance and peace.Advertising Looking for essay on religion theology? 'Fair values good, historical costs bad' (after Orwell; Animal Farm) Essay

'Fair values good, historical costs bad' (after Orwell; Animal Farm). Discuss - Essay Example Have the bean-counters tired of numbers? What in the balance sheet’s name is happening? The simple reason for the new mantra is that the accounting profession has decided on a new set of standards for the valuation of assets. Perhaps never before in accounting history has an issue generated such controversy as the debate between fair value and historical cost, which is reaching mythic proportions as a battle between good and evil. The accounting profession is one of the pillars of capitalism, a great invention of the modern era because it allows for transparency, fairness, and trust in the conduct of business (Johnson, 1975). Without accounting standards, it would have been impossible for the world of business to have gone as far as it has, simply because we would not have many of the aspects of business that we now take for granted. Valuation of corporate shares, borrowing and lending of funds, capitalisation of assets, and even pricing of products and services would have been problematic, as it was in the early days of business when the words caveat emptor (Buyer Beware!) was the norm. In addition, it is easier to calculate profit and loss and to price risk because accountants have agreed on generally accepted accounting practice. Investors are better informed, owners of corporations can sleep better at night, and millions of workers can get instant feedback on their collective performance thanks to the accounting standards that help establish share prices, cash flows, and liquidity, giving each stakeholder a clearer picture of its position. Accounting reports have come a long way in the last hundred years as to report the true position of a company’s accounts, but as recent events have made clear, notably the scandals associated with formerly high-flying companies Enron and WorldCom in the U.S., accounting standards need to be continuously and carefully defined

Discussion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 3

Discussion - Essay Example This philosophy requires that whatever one believes to be true or rational, must set aside while assuming the new opinion to be in provisional presumption. This not only helps the listener to put himself in the shoe of the speaker for the time being, but also helps him to get a clear picture of the speakers view. Moreover, this principle develops within a person the patience require to negate his personal attitudes and helps him to absorb a new concept, which might he has never come across. Interpretationism: Interpretation acts as a significant tool in the principle of charity and, is the process of evaluating attitudes to an individual on the basis of what he believes, says and does. Child (1996, p. 7) suggests that whenever we interpret someone, we actually aim to make attempt to sense of him by attributing beliefs, desires, intentions, emotions, and other propositional attitudes in the light of which we try to predict his rational action to the extent where we feel to gain an understanding of the nature of his mental reflection. An interpretation conception to this principle revolves around the notion that no individual can claim to be perfectly rational. He is always ready to learn new ideas which means he is exposed to all sorts of local irrationality in thought and action to which he believes is rational, but in fact is not rational for the set of attitudes he possess are absolutely irrational. Thus, he creates a nexus between the propositional attitudes and the notion of rationality as one of the source of interpretationists principle of charity. Contradiction incurs when the listener has own set of premises and is not ready to consider any argument other than the one he hold. Through such attitude, the listener actually contradicts to believe in the other set of principles and is adamant to learn no new concept or approach. This deviates from the above discussed principle of prediction because

Teens Spend Outrages Amount of Time Online Essay Example for Free

Teens Spend Outrages Amount of Time Online Essay This really shows how dependent teenagers have become of their gadgets. 88% of the teenagers think that these devices help them in everyday life and 69% of parents agree. One of the parents who do not agree is Susan Maushart, she decided to digitally detox her children and herself for a total of 6 months. Mother of 3 Susan Maushart decided to cut off all electronic devices and internet use for an entire 6 months as she thought her children were using too much time online, on their cellphones and on their iPods, she only saw their necks she said. Susan dropped the bomb on Christmas morning. The children were chocked and grumpy at first, but after the first month or so they were starting to enjoy it more and more. The children’s friends even thought it was cool, they would come over to Susan’s house to play games such as Scrabble or play music and sing. Susan kept a journal and published a book called â€Å"The winter of our disconnect†. Many adults were outraged by the experiment at first but now see how well it actually worked. Susan says that she actually bribed her children into the detox, she said that if she got the book published they would get a part of the money, but in the end it wasn’t needed as the kids enjoyed themselves and didn’t need all the electronics. Parents around the world are seeing this increasing amount of internet use negatively, many children are being addicted by gaming, and others are just wasting all their time on social networking sites instead of doing homework, working out or other more important things. Although parents agree that the internet makes life easier, most parent are also making restrictions to make sure their teenagers don’t abuse the internet. 30% of American parents believe that the media and the internet have no effect on their children. These parents will usually have little or no control over their teenagers, or the parents are simply teenagers themselves on the inside and use the social media sites as much as their children, making them think it is okay. Most teenagers know that they spend too much time online and know that it takes time away from doing homework etc. but most teenagers these days simply do not care. The schools aren’t as strict as they have been, so the young people don’t mind if they haven’t completed all of their homework. Of course that doesn’t mean that no teenagers do homework, but many more young people stay up late at night watching television or browsing the web, causing them to be unprepared and tired for school the next day. Physical contact is avoided more and more and teenagers communicate mostly by phone or the internet. As one of Susan Mausharts children said in an interview â€Å"Most of our plans are minute to minute and are made on Facebook. † This makes it harder for teenagers to stay off Facebook, as they do not want to miss anything, so the youngsters will stay online most of the time. American teenagers are on the internet or using electronic devices 8? hours on average, which is more time spent on the internet than time spent sleeping. This seems to become a problem for children as they become tired. At MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) teachers and professors are getting worried about their students engagement in school. They can see that the students aren’t fully concentrated on the teacher or the lesson. They sometimes check Facebook, read blogs or view Youtube videos. This is a problem as it takes more from the teachers side to obtain full attention, which means they have to do more work without getting paid more. The students at MIT themselves are under the impression that they can control it. That they can multitask, it is of their opinion that blocking sites such as Facebook or Twitter would only cause rage and would be of no help to the lectures. All in all parents and teenagers share some views while teachers have a totally different view on social networking. Most young people are aware of the problem but do nothing, while most parents put up time restrictions or such for their teenage children. The opinion of the teachers is that social networking should not be allowed in schools.

Art Exhibit on Brown Versus Board of Educaiton Essay -- African Americ

Like A Fish out of Water I’ll be the first to admit it: I cannot understand art for the life of me. That being said, I’m somehow always tricked into thinking I do. I’ve tried my hand at being one of those intellectuals who goes to art museums for recreation, and enjoys analyzing pictures, paintings and monochromic blobs. But every time I drag myself to a museum, I end up discovering the same three truths about myself: 1. I’m horrible at grasping the artist’s message. 2. I get frustrated with things I don’t understand. 3. When I get frustrated, I get mad. That being said, it was only natural that I go to the Krannert Art Museum to see the Brown v. Board of Education exhibit. I’ve never been to the Krannert Art Museum, and honestly did not expect very much. I mean, how much worthwhile art can a college museum in the middle of a cornfield house? I cautiously entered the building, trying to pretend like I had been there before. The golden rule of playing such a part is simple: never make eye contact. Once that happens, the jig is up. Somebody will realize I belong in the computer labs north of Green St. and immediately deport me back to the banks of boneyard. So I began calmly racing through the museum, never stopping to look at signs, (regular visitors don’t need to look at signs) hoping to find a giant Brown v. Board of Education sign somewhere. And after a couple of laps around the building, I found where I needed to be. I was actually impressed with the number of people who were checking out the exhibit. I expected to be the only one in the room, but instead saw a good number of people, mostly African-American, slowly inspecting every piece. I guess there are peopl... ...ny thing is, my parents came to America to raise a family in a better standard of living than India. They wanted all of their children to obtain a quality education and receive opportunities unavailable to them as youth. But without Brown v. Board, I would have been better off growing up in India. The message of Arundhati Roy’s portrait was simple: the civil rights movement affected more than Black America – it opened doors for all minorities. I took a step back from the portrait, and started walking out of the art museum. An as I left the museum, I did so with a little more gratefulness. While I may not understand the giant pile of bricks in the foyer, or why a man inside an imac keeps shouting â€Å"do you understand?†, I realized it doesn’t matter. Not everybody is cut out to be the art-connoisseur. But hey, at least I have the opportunity to give it a shot.

Addiction and Al-anon Meeting Essay

Just like the AA meeting, I felt very uncomfortable with attending an Al-Anon meeting. I have been fortunate enough where no one close to me has ever been addicted to alcohol. I wasn’t sure how well I would be able to relate to the members of this meeting. I was very nervous walking in the meeting and I felt out of place. One thing that brought me relief was the smiling faces and happy conversation I encountered as I entered the room. These people looked like they were trying to make the best out of the situation that their loved ones put them in. There was a lot of chatter in the room. People were talking about their past week and common ground between each other. The atmosphere of the room wasn’t as gloomy as when I attended the AA meeting. The people who were chatting the most looked like they might attend the Al-anon meetings regularly. The room I walked in looked like a lunch room with chairs and tables set up. The meeting started with a Serenity Prayer, which was similar to how my AA meeting started. Once again, like my AA meeting, it was explained to everyone that this was an Open meeting and no one was required to talk. The story that stood out the most to me was the story that came from the man in the blue jacket. This man looked to be about 26 years old. He told the story about how his father is an alcoholic and how he has been spending extra time with him during his free time to try and keep his father’s mind off of alcohol. He said he would do anything to help his father beat this addiction. I can relate to this story because I to have a family member who’s addiction consume her life. Just like the man in the blue jacket, I to would do anything to help my family member beat this addiction. No one really reacted to his story accept for the leader of the meeting. The leader said some words to the man. There was another member of the group who began talking about her struggles in relation to the man in the blue jacket’s story. All of the people attending this meeting are there because someone they love needs help fighting an addiction. From the stories I heard, these addictions are affecting everyone’s daily life, not just the person addicted. From my own personal experience with addiction, I am always worried about my family member. My family member has a gambling addiction, so she must never be able to have cash. This is a daily struggle for me because I take care of all her finances, so she does not have any temptation. The people in this meeting were trying to help their loved ones in the same way, by trying to limit the temptation of drinking alcohol or doing drugs. I think the biggest difference with the Al-anon meeting versus the AA meeting is that the people attending the Al-anon meeting were all there voluntarily. When I attended the AA meeting you could definitely tell that there was some court ordered participants. Everyone at the Al-anon meeting was more than willing to share their struggles and triumphs with everyone in the room, where as in the AA meeting only one or two people shared their stories. Overall, It think these meetings are a great source for people dealing with addiction, for everyone needs to be able to share their experiences to be able to lift them off their shoulders.

Kinesthetic Learning

When I first read this assignment, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I remembered back to when my children were in preschool, which was sixteen and eighteen years ago, and was struck by the realization that I couldn’t recall them learning kinesthetically. It seemed to me that the only time I really saw them moving was during designated play time. I was very pleased when I walked into my church preschool, for a day of observing and volunteering, and the first thing I saw was the children learning through movement. In an effort to learn their numbers, they were all standing in a large circle, with Teacher Karla standing in the center holding a stack of cards with a number printed on each. She passed a ball to one student and then held up a card with the number four (4) on it, and the little boy bounced the ball four times and then passed the ball to the next child, who looked to the teacher for his number, which was a seven (7). He had a little more trouble and only bounced th e ball six times because he forgot the number five.He passed the ball on to the little girl next to him, who looked to the teacher, who still held up the number seven (7), due to the mistake of the previous child. I wasn’t sure how that would work, but the little girl bounced the ball seven times, and the boy, responded with â€Å"Oh yeah, I forgot five. How come you didn’t tell me Teacher? † Teacher Karla responded to this by explaining that we don’t always just learn from the teacher and that we can learn from each other, as well.Later in the day, I was pleasantly surprised to see that teacher Karla was using the Letter Mats that I had created for her a few years ago when I helped out in the preschool. The Letter Mats are large laminated mats with big letters written on them. The letters are not in alphabetical order and each letter is written more than once on each mat. Because this was an activity that I had come up with, Teacher Karla asked me to lea d. I stood in front of the mats and called out a letter. Each child then jumped on that letter on the mat in front of them. I then called out another letter and they jumped from letter to letter. We continued this until they had jumped from A to Z, with a few mess ups in between, but for the most part, most of the children jumped to the right letters most of the time. Chapter 2, Question While volunteering at the preschool, I have a lot of opportunity to watch the way different music affects the children’s moods and behavior. I wasn’t too surprised by my observations because music has always been something I have loved and when I ran an in home childcare, I used different forms of music all of the time. While at the preschool, I observed teacher Karla change the music frequently, depending on the mood she was trying to create. When they were playing the number and ball game, there was lively music playing, with children singing strong and loud. This music seemed to energ ize the children. When it was art time, and the children were painting, she slowed the music down and, while the children still chatted while doing their painting, they were much calmer than they had been earlier. When we did the activity with the Letter Mats, we listened to children singing the alphabet. The children really enjoyed singing along and I think because it was an alphabet song and coincided with our activity, it helped them stay on focus.

The Moment of Faith--Analysis on Jan Van Eycks The Betrotha essays

The Moment of FaithAnalysis on Jan Van Eycks The Betrotha essays Of all the early Flemish paintings, few are as famous as Jan Van Eycks The Betrothal of Arnolfini. Its unsurpassed solemnity and painstaking details have epitomized the essence of the early traditions of the Netherlandish art. Finished in 1434, the painting stands 85 cm x 63 cm and is painted on wood. It originally belongs to Margaret of Austria, whose well-documented inventory description reads, A large painting said to be Hernoul le Fin with his wife within a chamber, which was given to Madame by Don Diego, whose arms are on the cover of this picture made by the painter Johannes." (Dhanens, 195) From this script, the male on the left side of the picture has traditionally been identified as Giovanni Arnolfini, a wealthy and prominent Lucchese merchant living in Bruges until 1472. The female on the right is said to be Giovanna Cenami, the daughter of another successful Lucchese merchant. The contemporary law in the fifteenth century recognizes the validity of a marriage even wi thout any written documents or marriage ceremonies, provided the parties are of equal rank and their consent can be confirmed by the testimony of friends. (Gies, 293) Therefore, this particular painting in which Giovanni Arnolfini holds the right hand of his bride solemnly is often interpreted as a sacred testimony of their betrothal. With his masterful incorporation of appearance, gestures, setting, and objects, Jan Van Eyck ingeniously captures this solemn moment in which a man and a woman is united by faith under God with pictorial elements of sacredness, intimacy, and blessing of fertility. In the Betrothal of Arnolfini Van Eycks precise treatment of the appearance of his characters brings out the reality in a domestic marriage between the two well-respected family. Arnolfini is attired in a black, velvety coat with a sleeveless, fur-trimmed tunic and an enormous wide-brimmed hat. He looks both fashionable and well to do. It is ...

Why Do You Sweat - Evaporative Cooling - The Heat Index

Why Do You Sweat - Evaporative Cooling - The Heat Index Most people know sweating is a process your body uses to cool down. Your body is always trying to maintain an even body temperature. Sweating reduces body heat through a process known as evaporative cooling. Just like getting out of a pool in the summertime, a small wind will be enough movement across your wet skin to create cooling. Try This Simple Experiment Wet the back of your hand.Blow gently across your hand. You should already feel a cooling sensation. Now, blot your hand dry and use the opposite hand to feel the actual temperature of your skin. It will actually be cooler to the touch! During the summer, humidity in certain areas of the world is very high. Some people even refer to the weather as muggy weather. High relative humidity means the air is holding a lot of water. But there is a limit to the amount of water air can hold. Think of it this way...If you have a glass of water and a pitcher, no matter how much water is in the pitcher, you simply cannot make a glass hold more water. Just to be fair, the idea of air holding water can be seen as a common misconception unless you look at the full story on how water vapor and air interact. There is a wonderful explanation of the common misconception with relative humidity from Georgia State University. Relative Humidity is a "Glass Half Full" Going back to the idea of evaporative cooling, if there is nowhere for the water to evaporate to, then it stays on your skin surface. In other words, when the relative humidity is very high, there is only a little room in that glass for more water. If the Heat Index is High in Your Area... When you sweat, the only way you cool down is through evaporation of water from your skin. But if the air is holding too much water already, the sweat stays on your skin and you get little to no relief from the heat. A high Heat Index value shows a small chance of evaporative cooling from the skin. You even feel like it is hotter outside because you cant rid your skin of the excess water. In many areas of the world, that sticky, humid feeling is nothing more than... Your Body Says: Wow, my sweating mechanism is not cooling my body very well because the high temperatures and high relative humidity combine to create less than ideal conditions for the evaporative cooling effects of water from surfaces. You and I say: Wow, it is hot and sticky today. I better get in the shade! Either way you look at it, the Heat Index is designed to keep you safe in the summertime. Keep on alert for all signs of summer heat illnesses and know the danger zones!

Conclusions and recommendations Dissertation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Conclusions and recommendations - Dissertation Example The researcher also adopted the use of interview as a research instrument to sample views from workers of the company. The research instrument was used on five out of six members of the company, which represents 83.3% of the staff strength of the company. The data that was collected was well presented and analysed. With information from these primary and secondary data collected, the researcher has drawn the following conclusions about the recruitment and selection process at B&M Company and other pertinent organisational issues that relate to the company. Efficiency and Effectiveness of Recruitment Method Because of the size of the company’s staff, it employs external recruitment method. Pillar (2011), ‘External recruitment is when organizations looks to fill the vacancy from any suitable applicant outside organizations.’ To attract applicants for vacant positions, the company advertises in local community newspaper. The company restricts itself to the local comm unity newspaper in order to minimise the number of prospective applicants because of the size of the company. It was also said that the company did not have enough funds to embark on mass publicity. This mode of advertisement however affected the effectiveness of the recruitment process. This is because it did not expose the company to reaching a large human resource base. The company should have known that the wider the range of jobseekers, the wider the range of human resource with abilities and knowledge they would have attracted. ‘Promotion and advertisement are directly linked to marketing because the promotional campaigns tend to have a huge effect on the reception of the product. Good marketing is something that helps your business grow bigger.’ (McCollister, 2007) The company however had a very detailed job description and job specification. Job description is a written statement showing job title, tasks, duties and responsibilities involved in a job. It also pr escribes the working conditions, hazards, stress and relationship with other jobs. Job specifications, also known as man or employee specifications, is prepared on the basis of job specification. It specifies the qualities required in a job incumbent for the effective performance of the job (Prasad, 2007). Because the job description and job specifications were very detailed, prospective employees had a very good idea of what the company was looking for. This approach, in no uncertain terms reduced the chances of the company having to waste resources and time interviewing people who did not have what the company was looking for. Efficiency was therefore recorded here. Efficiency and Effectiveness in Recruitment Processes The major recruitment processes involved giving feedback on candidates who were shortlisted and the interview itself. The feedback process was very effective. Most workers interviewed said they had feedback on their application was well communicated to them and they were made aware of all that to expect in the interview. It was also confirmed that the feedback was very prompt. When interviewees receive prompt feedback on their candidature to attend interviews and the interview requirements are well communicated to them, it enhances efficiency during the interview itself because it reduces the incidence of time wastage because the interviewees come well prepared. It also ensures efficiency of man power as interviewers do not do a lot of talking, explaining the interview routine

Photo51 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Photo51 - Essay Example The Watson and Click models showed the backbone of a molecule to be located at the center and the bases diffusing outward. Watson and Crick recognized that if the bases were organized to point inward, then the DNA width can move toward 2.0-nm like illustrated in Photo51 (Fitzgerald-Hayes & Reichsman 22). Rosalind Franklin discovered a specific well-determined X-ray diffraction pattern of a DNA fiber in Photo51. The DNA fiber was utilized to explain the 3.4á ¾ ¹ distance between the 34á ¾ ¹ periodicity of the helix and base pairs. In addition, the photo51 revealed the actual dimensions of DNA diameter and molecule (Anholt & Mackay 51). The photograph assisted Watson and Crick to conclude that the DNA molecules constitutes of two strands. The two strands are double helix that runs in opposite directions. The information was employed to construct a three-dimensional structure of DNA that demonstrated to be accurate (Anholt & Mackay 51). In conclusion, the Photo51 opened a new window in scientific history by discovering the formation of DNA. The dimensions revealed in the photograph assisted in the accurate development of a DNA structure. The information disclosed the composition of the genetic

Computer Platforms Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Computer Platforms - Essay Example This report will present the research based analysis for the state-of-the-art technology implementation in audio and broadcast areas. This report will suggest and provide the recommendation based analysis for the implementation of this technology at Radio Station. Computers are commanding tools that facilitate users to store and carry out operations on large amounts of data rapidly. Basically every organization, no matter what is the size of organization; makes use of the computers to hold bookkeeping, track inventory, and store documents. As organization develops they frequently need a number of people to input and process data at the same time. For this to be advantageous, those people must be able to distribute the data each person enters. Networking computers turns out to be useful in these circumstances. Networks are merely a collection of computers linked by cable or other media as a result they can share information. Networks made distribution of data much straightforward and more efficient for users (Nash, 2000, p. 5). The development and accomplishment of computer and information technology has fundamentally transformed the working and performance of every field of life (Laudon & Laudon, 1999). At the present time, we have more rapid means of information transferring and communication. The effect of the computer and information technology (ICT) in media industry is tremendously deep and influential (Laudon & Laudon, 1999). The Radio industry is also a most important area of media that has a greater influence in working and handling of the radio station. Over the past few years, modern and the up-to-date Radio technology particular to the area of information and entertainment has transformed dramatically. A supreme example of this is satellite radio. In the place of the listening the customary Radio transmission, we at the present time, are able to listen the local radio channels

Marketing Segmentation Targeting And Positioning Marketing Essay

Marketing Segmentation Targeting And Positioning Marketing Essay Introduction In marketing segmentation, targeting and positioning of the product is necessary, it is also known as STP process. Segmentation helps the manager to identify which area they have to focus on according to geography, demographics, social or other factors. After segmentation targeting is done which requires the needs of target customers to be fulfilled. After segmentation and targeting the positioning comes which refers to the way the consumer have the image of the product. Segmentation, targeting and positioning go hand in hand for an organisation to achieve the desirables. Market segmentation is a process of grouping people together with similar needs or smaller segments who show similar buying pattern. Segmentation is done either for differentiating a product or to target a specific group of people to earn profit. It is a form of critical evaluation rather than a prescribed system or process. According to Kotler 2010 the requirements of effective segmentation must be: Measurable It depends upon the buying capacity of the consumer. Accessible For effective segmentation the product should be easily accessible and the needs of the consumer are fulfilled. Substantial There should be enough number of people to buy the product. Differentiable This market segment has made different segments and they act accordingly according to the market need. Actionable This depends on how the product attracts and serves the segments. When the focus is on segmented markets a company is allowed to use its resources more effectively and efficiently thereby increasing the chances of its success in the market. According to Kotler 2010 for the effective segmentation of Apple iPhone the buying capacity of the consumer is a little low due to laws of economics. An Apple iphone costs around  £299 which is a lot of money and people think a lot before buying it. The Apple iPhone is widely accessible to USA, UK and many European countries but Apple does not launch its iPhone in countries where they feel people wont be able to pay the price. According to (West Mace, 2007) Apple differentiates itself from its competitors through innovation. The iPhone offers unique features which cannot be imitated and offers the latest feature which attracts customers to buy the product. Blackberry on the other hand like iPhone has a low buying power due to the fact that it is regarded as a business phone but it has its own market in which it excels. Blackberry sells everywhere and in the business world there are enough people to buy the product. Blackberry is regarded as a business phone which differentiates it; apart from being a business phone Blackberry also differentiates itself by its unique Blackberry messenger service in which a person can send and receive instant text messages anywhere and in any part of the world without being charged. The Blackberry messenger service differentiates this phone from its competitors. Blackberry has attracted a lot of business personnel as the phone serves the purpose of being connected with the business anytime. Nokia is different from both Blackberry and the Apple iPhone it has high buying power because it has a phone for everyone may be rich or poor. Nokia has entered the markets of both Blackberry and Apple iPhone and is doing quite well. The Blackberry is competing with Nokia E series which is the business edition of Nokia and for the Apple iPhone it is the N series. Apart from these series there are other series as well which focuses on the different segments of the society. Nokia has its products in every segment and which is at a lower price than its competitors which help Nokia to differentiate itself. Nokia sells its products in every part of the world unlike the iPhone and Blackberry and at a lower price. This low price is achieved because of economies of scale, since it serves a large number of the population. Due to Nokia phones being cheap, reliable and long lasting than its competitors it attracts a lot of customer. Nokia offers similar features as offered by its counterparts . Nokia products are not always cheap it has a product range called the Vertu which offers the worlds most exclusives phones. According to (Dibb et. al. 2006) the advantages of segmentation of a market can be done by:- Understanding the customer This requires a careful study and research to understand the customer needs and wants. Therefore an organisation can focus on the key factors and put more emphasis on understanding the customer thereby improving brand loyalty. Understand the competitor This requires a study of the market to know who the main competition for an organisation is and which segment is been targeted. So that the organisation pays more emphasis on the product. Effective resource allocation After understanding the customer and the competitors an organisation is in a better position to utilize the company resources effectively. Strategic Marketing Planning Dividing the market into segments helps the marketers to develop special plans to gain the attention of the competitors. Market segmentation According to Dibb et. al. 2006 market can be segmented according to Demographic Variables Age Occupation Gender Family Size Race Family life cycle Ethnicity Religion Income Social Class Education Geographic Variables Population City Size Region Market Density Urban, Suburban, Climate rural Psychographic Variables Personality attributes Motives Lifestyles Behaviouristic Variables Volume usage End use Benefit expectations Brand loyalty Price sensitivity (Adapted from Dibb et. al. 2006 pp 228) Demographic Variables It is the characteristics of the population such as age, gender, race which help in knowing the needs and buying behaviour and can be recorded. These types of variables can be measured easily. It helps an organization to know what type of population they are going to target. According to Kotler 2010 by segmenting according to the age helps the companies to develop the product according to the needs and wants of that age group. Segmentation according to gender or income divides the market accordingly and it helps to understand what type of products a company has to deliver in order to achieve Geographic Variables The need of customers changes according to the population, region, and climate. The geographic variables play a very important role in the market segmentation because the needs of customer may be different for different customers. An organization can decide in which countries they would like to operate in or what kind of population they are going to target. Psychographic Variables The personality characteristics, motives and lifestyles are sometime used to segment the market. It can be used alone or mixed with any other type of market segment. It is useful when the competition is intense. The marketers may also segment according to the social classes of different people; this helps an organization to know who their customers is and what kind of products they would like to have. Music Hip-Hop Getting a Bad Rap Among many problems in society today, rap music is being blamed for the confusion of America's youths. One key problem is the way a child is raised. Not having a positive role model can have a powerful effect on a child. The other dilemma is the type of rap music. Gangster rapper's lyrics seem to corrupt and have a negative image on a youth's mind. Two possible steps to taking the blame away from rap music is by placing the spotlight on other influences such as friends and even the family as the source of confusion. Indian Price Rises

Rising Price in India wrote by : MILAN CHATERJEE ,india from : http://www. publishyourarticles. org/eng/articles/rising-price-in-india. html Today, India is facing many problems – the problem of corruption, the problem of unemployment, the problem of illiteracy, the problem of population, so on and so forth. The problem of rising prices is one of the most important problems that Indian is facing now. This problem is two-fold to check the rising prices and, if possible, to bring the prices down. The economists are of opinion that growing economy of the country has given rise to the rising prices. Such economy causes inflation. In inflation purchasing power runs ahead of purchasable goods. In other words, in a growing country, the supply of money increase at once but the supply of goods takes time to increase. Again the population has increased. This has further increased inflation. Because of growing population the current corruption is increasing. There is another cause of risi ng prices. The production of consumption goods has been very slowly rising. Our plants are also responsible for the present food situation. High targets were set to be achieved in defense and development. Levels of outlay on the development were suggested. No consideration was given to the existing state of economy. The pressure on real resources has been increasing. The gap between the return and investment also has its effect upon the present price situation. Thirdly, the kind of system of Government is liable to inflation. Restraint cannot be exercised in spending. Often it happens that claims have to be met mainly allocating funds. In the period of rising prices, the rich got richer and poor, poorer. The rich own the means of production. They pay the laborers handsomely. But they take of the left hand what they gave with right hand. The cost of goods swells up. The prices naturally go up. What his master gives him, the market takes. Rising prices encourage hoarding, profiteering, black –marketing and corruption. They discourage export. They cause devaluation of currency. Lastly, they seriously disrupt equitable distribution of wealth. The problem is very dangerous. It needs measures – short and long term, to be adopted. These measures include as appeal mixed up with threat to the sellers, raids on go downs and other hoards of grain, the seizing of black, the cut of Rs 400 crores in central expenditure, the ncrease in bank rates to 5 %, the opining of fair price shops, the rationing of provisions, the imports of food-grains from some foreign counties, the curbing of unproductive expenditure by the Government, the readjustment in the scale of pay and the emphasis on small plants. The short term measure will help the government to hold the price-line. The long term measures will help the government to withdraw the huge amount of money pumped into circulation during the last year. Corruption has also given rise to rising prices. Analyze the news In dia has been having this economic cycle for centuries. But the issue of price of goods has been rising in India had been considered just a while ago. In the past, this economic cycle started with the problem of its population. The inequality distribution of wealth makes the poor suffer from starving as they do not have money to buy food or clothes. On the other hand, the rich just kept taking advantage of whomever underneath them. Nowadays, India has been intervened by other countries that want to help to improve the quality of life of the poor in India. Due to the better quality living of the people, they seem to have more purchasing power than before. The growing population in India, is also the result of improving quality of life, is creating a shortage of consumption goods. Because the demand increase rapidly more than the supply of goods. The increasing of population also creates more corruptions between the government and the investors, because rising price guides them the ways of making more benefits. These all situations have just creating further problems continuously from the past. It seems like these problem would never end because if they cannot fix one spot on the cycle, the other spot would never be solved.

A Case Analysis on Starbucks’ Mission Essay

Summary Named after the first mate in Moby Dick, Starbucks was founded in 1971 by three partners in Seattle’s renowned open-air Pike Place Market. Starbucks is now the third largest restaurant chain in the country, nearly 1,000 stores in 55 countries. It was the intention of director of retail operations and marketing Howard Schlutz to make Starbucks into â€Å"the third place† consumers frequent, after home and work. You can find a Starbucks in various settings including office buildings, bookstores, and university campuses. Starbucks promotes convenience by selling its products through retail outlets. In order to remain competitive, Starbucks has introduced many new products over the years. The recent global recession brought a change in policy, causing Starbucks to cut back on expansion in the US and focus more on international markets. See more:  Perseverance essay Taking necessary measures to remain relevant, Starbucks has come up with successful, â€Å"keep customers coming† methods such as, Breakfast pairings, VIA instant coffee, Starbucks card, even a mobile app. Another key part of the Starbucks image involves its commitment to ethics and sustainability, â€Å"people first, profit last†. Because of its strong corporate culture, Starbucks has been ranked Fortune’s â€Å"100 Best Companies to Work for† for nearly a decade as well as being voted â€Å"Most Ethical Company† Founder and chair Schlutz is a true believer that ethical companies do better in the long run. Starbucks is also actively involved with nonprofit organizations around the globe including but not limited to Bono’s Product RED who raise money for HIV and AIDS research. The company also makes $14.5 in loans t poor farmers around the world. Schlutz key to maintaining a strong business is â€Å"creating an environment where everyone bel ieves they’re part of something larger than themselves but believes they also have a voice.† The company’s efforts at transparency, the treatment of its workers, and its dozens of philanthropic commitments demonstrate how genuine Starbucks is in its mission to be an ethical and socially responsible company. Its reputation is built on product quality, stakeholder concern, and a balanced approach to all of its business activities. In spite of Starbucks efforts to maintain high ethical standards, the company has garnished harsh criticisms on issues such as lack of fair trade coffee, hormone added milk, Schlutz alleged financial links to the Israeli government and that the company’s relentless growth has forced locally run coffee shops out of business. The challenges that the company has experienced and will continue to experience have convinced it to focus on its strengths. And despite setbacks, allegations, and the recession, the future looks bright for Starbucks. Questions 1.Why do you think Starbucks has been so concerned with social responsibility in its overall corporate strategy? Starbucks has been so concerned with social responsibility for two main reasons, to investigate its negative impact on the company’s financial and nonfinancial rewards. According to our textbook, Starbucks has been engaged in responsible business practices almost from day one. Being socially responsible Starbucks has its financial and nonfinancial rewards say Schultz. â€Å"Whom is a firm believer of ethics, they do better in the long run. Because of Starbucks’ dedication to their employees and their suppliers, Starbucks had earned their loyalty. During the 2008-2009 recession, they decided to refocus their strategy. They closed several hundred underperforming locations in response to the economic downturn. They also introduced â€Å"breakfast pairings†, a Starbucks-styled value meal, for an affordable price. They even introduced an instant coffee consumers can brew at home. Due of their substantial growth over two decades, they have spent a considerable amount of time defending their image, due to their â€Å"clustering† strategy to many small coffee shops out of business and many consumers began to wonder if there really was a need for two Starbucks right across the street from each other. Finally Starbucks has been so concerned with social responsibility in its overall corporate strategy because it’s popular! Also it helps the company’s image, to care about the community and the environment. Those are positive standpoints that define the company’s self portrayal, it’s important how you look on the outside but in the end it’s all about sales! 2.Is Starbucks unique in being able to provide a high level of benefits its employees? Most companies, though they value their employees, have not been known to put them on the pedestal employees of Starbucks have been put on. Founder Schlutz key to maintain a strong business is â€Å"creating an environment where everyone believes they’re part of something larger than themselves but believes they also have a voice.† Nonetheless Starbucks benefits package is a key reason why it has remarkable low employee turnover and high productivity. 3.Do you think that Starbucks has grown rapidly because of its ethical and socially responsible activities or because it provides products and an environment that customers want? Both aspects have lead to the growth of the company. Its clean ethical nature has allowed for the company to be deemed trust worthy but all those involved with in it. The consumer friendly accommodations have kept the customers happy. Its community involvement has shown its concern for more than just profit. The company’s efforts at transparency, the treatment of its workers, and its dozens of philanthropic commitments demonstrate how genuine Starbucks is in its mission to be an ethical and socially responsible company. Thus far gaining growth.
